This is Khao Jee, a baby red-shanked douc langur who was being sold into the illegal pet trade after her parents were reportedly shot and killed. Our team set out on what became a 30+ hour rescue mission to bring her back to our centre. When we first reached her, Khao Jee was lethargic, dehydrated, hypothermic, and hadn’t eaten. Our head veterinarian, Dr. Daria, worked tirelessly to stabilise her, and during the long drive back, she slowly began to improve. Since arriving at the centre a few days ago, she’s continued to show positive signs, but she remains fragile and is receiving ongoing treatment and 24/7 care. Red-shanked douc langurs are critically endangered, and cases like this are heartbreakingly common in Laos. Primate mothers are killed, and babies are sold into the illegal pet trade.
