23 year old #Vickrum Digwa's actions resulted in the death of 18 year old #Henry Nowak (in Southampton, UK) and devastated a family that had every reason to expect their son would come home alive. Regardless of what Vickrum’s intentions may have been, a young man lost his life. That fact alone makes the incident impossible to justify. The video of how the police handled the situation has left many people, including me, disturbed and angry. Vickrum Digwa appeared to receive the benefit of the doubt, while Henry, despite reportedly telling officers that he had been stabbed multiple times, was handcuffed as he lay critically injured. Set aside race, religion, and politics for a moment, and look at Henry simply as someone's son. Doing so makes it easier to understand the fear he may have felt in his final moments and the loss his family continues to endure. The tragedy has also generated intense scrutiny of the Sikh community and, more broadly, of Indian immigrants in Britain. While individuals must be held accountable for their own actions, entire communities, might be judged for the conduct of one person. Nevertheless, incidents of this nature can inflame tensions, deepen mistrust, and place innocent people under an unwelcome spotlight. As for Vickrum Digwa, reports that he had previously been barred from a gurdwara because of alleged unruly behaviour have led some to question whether earlier warning signs were missed. The focus should remain on the loss of a young life and justice for Henry Nowak and his family. #RIP Henry Nowak.
