In 1941, during the dark days of World War II, a brick kiln worker named Carlo Soriani found a small, injured street dog lying in a ditch in Luco Mugello, Italy. Carlo took the wounded dog home, nursed him back to health, and named him Fido (derived from the Latin word meaning "Faithful"). From that moment on, an unbreakable bond was formed. Every afternoon at 5:30 PM, Fido would walk to the local bus stop to greet Carlo as he returned from work, walking side-by-side back home. On December 30, 1943, Carlo’s factory was tragically struck by an air raid, and he lost his life. That evening, Carlo didn't step off the bus. But Fido was there, waiting. For the next 14 years—over 5,000 consecutive days until his own passing in 1958—Fido walked to that exact same bus stop every single day at 5:30 PM, holding on to the hope that his best friend would return.
