Long before Doge, Cate and Shiba Inu, Japan had Mona (モナー) - a cat-like ASCII-art character that took over 2channel, the country's biggest message board, in the early 2000s. Drawn entirely from text characters and famous for the catchphrase "omae mo na~" ("same to you"), Mona became one of Japan's most viral internet icons. In 2013, that meme became money: MonaCoin, dubbed "the first Japanese cryptocurrency." grew into Japan's homegrown answer to Bitcoin - complete with tipping culture, digital shrines, and fans even dedicating real land to the coin. The coin has become somewhat of Japan’s national alternative to Bitcoin or Litecoin.
