The dog, also known as Canis familiaris or Canis lupus familiaris, is a species that comes from wolves. It's the first animal humans ever domesticated, over 15,000 years ago, even before farming started. This long history with people means there are lots of dogs around today, and they've gotten good at eating foods rich in starch that other wild canines can't handle. Dogs have been bred for all kinds of things humans need, like hunting, herding, carrying stuff, protection, helping out the police and military, being good company, therapy work, and helping people with disabilities. They come in a huge variety of shapes, sizes, and colors because of this selective breeding. Thanks to all this time spent with humans, dogs are really in tune with human behavior, making the bond between people and dogs a special one that's been studied a lot. This close relationship is why dogs are often called "man's best friend."
