On September 26, 2020, Victorine Dartois went missing after an afternoon shopping trip with friends. After missing her bus, she opted to walk the remaining distance home near the Stade de la Prairie in Villefontaine, Isère. When she did not arrive, a massive search was launched. Two days later, on September 28, 2020, her partially undressed and lifeless body was found submerged in a nearby stream. An autopsy revealed she had been strangulated and drowned. The Investigation and SuspectShortly after the discovery, investigators identified a local neighbor, Ludovic Bertin, as the prime suspect. The 25-year-old married father, who lived roughly 800 meters from the crime scene, was apprehended by police. Upon questioning, Bertin admitted to strangling Victorine, though he initially claimed it was the result of an accidental shove and an argument during a chance encounter. However, forensic evidence and the state of her clothing led investigators to conclude he had attacked her in an attempted rape, which ultimately led to her murder.
