Bartman is Bart Simpson’s superhero alter‑ego, essentially his kid version of Batman, complete with a cape, mask, and gadgety gimmicks like a grappling hook and “Bartarangs.” He first showed up in the season 2 episode “Three Men and a Comic Book,” which aired on May 9, 1991, when Bart attends a comic book convention dressed in costume and later uses the Bartman persona as part of his comic‑obsessed adventures. In that episode he’s trying to buy the first issue of a fictional comic called Radioactive Man, and the Bartman identity fits into the whole comic‑book superhero vibe of the story. What Bartman is about is Bart’s fantasy of being a cool, powerful hero in contrast to his real life as a mischievous, often powerless elementary school kid. The show treats him as a playful parody of dark, brooding superheroes, especially Batman, letting Bart act out vigilante‑style heroics in his imagination and in comic‑book tie‑ins. The idea was popular enough that Bartman got his own short‑lived comic series in the 1990s Simpsons Comics line, and the persona keeps popping up in later episodes, specials, and video games as a recurring joke about Bart’s love of comics and rebellion. There’s also a non‑canon season 18 segment that gives Bart a full Batman‑style origin story, with his parents “killed” in an alley and him becoming a grim avenger, which is the most extreme version of what Bartman represents: Bart reimagining himself as the ultimate tough, in‑control hero in a world where he usually gets grounded.
