Long before Pepe became an icon, there was Oggie. The frog first appeared in legendary San Francisco illustrator Robert Crumb’s The Big Yum Yum Book in 1964, decades before the meme era began. Matt Furie later moved to San Francisco inspired by Crumb, and years later sketched Pepe while working in a local thrift shop, eventually introducing the world to “Feels Good Man.” From Crumb’s “Life is Good” to Furie’s “Feels Good Man,” Oggie connects two generations of iconic counterculture frogs.
