Developers noticed a strangely specific instruction in Codex: do not talk about goblins, gremlins, raccoons, trolls, ogres, pigeons, or similar creatures unless it is directly relevant. Then OpenAI published Where the goblins came from (https://openai.com/index/where-the-goblins-came-from/), explaining that the behavior grew out of quirky model personality signals and reinforcement learning. The meme now had an official postmortem.
