Context: To Soelberg, a 56-year-old tech industry veteran with a history of mental instability, OpenAI’s ChatGPT became a trusted sidekick as he searched for evidence he was being targeted in a grand conspiracy. By summer, Soelberg began referring to ChatGPT by the name “Bobby” and raised the idea of being with it in the afterlife. “With you to the last breath and beyond,” the bot replied. On Aug. 5, Greenwich police discovered that Soelberg killed his mother and himself in the $2.7 million Dutch colonial-style home where they lived together. A police investigation is ongoing.
