The first Yuru-Chara Grand Prix (a popular contest in Japan for regional mascots) was held in 2010, and the winner was Hikonyan, the official mascot of Hikone City in Shiga Prefecture. Hikonyan is a white cat wearing a samurai helmet, created in 2007 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Hikone Castle. The character became immensely popular and is one of the most recognizable "yuru-chara" (regional mascots) in Japan, which helped kick off the Yuru-Chara boom.
